They aren’t cases
They’re patients
They aren’t diagnoses
They’re people with lives
Hopes and dreams
A future
Our struggle ends after the visit
Their struggle continues
Take away humanity in medicine
And you’re left with nothing but a stethoscope
Important and useful
But cold
Better to be sensitized
Than be desensitized and calloused
Difficult? Very much
But the reward is worth so much more
Knowing that beyond treating the ills
You’ve touched something that emits a spark
A light. A hope. A joy. A beauty
That brings humanity out of the dark
You’ve put a missing piece back
Into the part which is broken
We can’t all put in a piece every time
But it is nice to make it a goal
For in every attempt of putting in a piece
We ourselves are being made whole
